About Ratanakiri:

Ratanakiri is a province rich in natural beauty, located 635km northeast of Phnom Penh. Around 70% of its population are tribal (non-Khmer) people and the main religions are Buddhism and Animism.

It has good quality roads and an international airport will be constructed nearby.

When complete, it will be 3 hours from Phnom Penh.

Ratanakiri became a province in 1960. The capital is Banlung in the highlands on Road 19 near the Vietnam and Laos borders. There are two rivers crossing the province (Srepok and Sesan).

Sparsely populated, the region has thick forested areas famous for natural resources.

The province has an undulating landscape with a level plateau, wet lowlands, crater lakes, rivers and waterfalls.

Forests cover much of the province, still rich in wildlife. The soil ranges from rich volcanic to sandy soil found near rivers. Ratanakiri offers good opportunities for eco-tourism.

Ratanakiri is underdeveloped and it has a range of natural resources that can serve to develop the nation.

Resources include gold, mine, gemstones, granite, onyx, fertile red soil, clean water, wildlife and wood.

Above all it has beautiful weather with fresh and reliable rainfall.

The region has 3 seasons – rainy (June – Oct), cool (Nov – Feb) and hot (Mar – May).

It has many attractions, like – Yeak Loam, Ou Sean Lair, Cha Ung Waterfalls, Veal Rum Plan, Virachay Park, Lumphat Sanctuary and Norng Kabat Forest.

According to 12GoAsia Banlung is…

one of the most off-the-beaten track locations in Cambodia but this is arguably one of the main reasons to come here.

If you are looking for an authentic slice of Cambodian countryside then you will certainly find it and this is also the home of Virachey National Park, the biggest draw in the area.

Other highlights include the Yeak Laom Lake which sits in a scenic crater as well as a wealth of splendid waterfalls, sleepy villages, and a bounty of flora and fauna inside the national park.

One thing to note if you venture here however is that it is not a heavily visited area and as such the tourist infrastructure is not as well established as it is in other parts of Cambodia.

Much of Banlung is covered in dirt roads and fields which are actually a pretty red hue.

In the dry season however it can be extremely hot and the dirt turns to dust which can make for a rather oppressive atmosphere.

In the rainy season however, from June to October, the rains turn everything to mud and if you want to explore the national park then it may make for a rather wet and soggy visit.

The park remains open throughout the season, although some more remote parts can’t be visited when the rains are in full force.

As such, November or early December are good months to come to Banlung as the rainy season should be over and the heat has yet to reach its peak…”.
