Tonle Bassac

The area

Tonle Bassac lies on the west bank of the Bassac River and covers around three square kilometres, bounded by Sihanouk Boulevard, Norodom Boulevard and National Road 1. Step off the main roads and you’ll find quiet alleys lined with bars and restaurants, popular with locals, expats and visitors alike.

The district hosts the embassies of Thailand, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Russia, Malaysia, South Korea and the Philippines. Together with its government buildings and gated communities, this gives Tonle Bassac a visible security presence, one reason it appeals to families and diplomatic staff.

At its northern edge, the reclaimed island of Koh Pich adds modern condominiums, hotels, exhibition halls and landmark buildings such as The Bridge and The Peak.

Close to Independence Monument, lies Bassac Lane, one of Phnom Penh’s liveliest nightlife spots. Together with neighbouring Streets 308 and 21, it is packed with cosy, upmarket bars and restaurants, many tucked away down narrow side streets, alongside new condominiums. Each venue has its own style and theme, giving the area a relaxed, international feel that makes it a favourite for an evening out.

Schools nearby

Families are well served. iCAN British International School, on Ke Nou Street, teaches the British curriculum to children aged 2 to 11. On Koh Pich, the Canadian International School of Phnom Penh offers the IB programme from nursery to Grade 12, with a preschool campus in Bassac Garden City, while EFI, the École Française Internationale, provides French-curriculum education from preschool through middle school.

Work and getting around

Grade-A office buildings such as Morgan Tower, The Peak and GIA Tower house multinational companies and local businesses, so many residents can live close to work. Major city roads link the district to the rest of Phnom Penh, and the Koh Pich–Koh Norea Bridge has made eastern Phnom Penh easier to reach.

Typical rents

As a general guide, studios rent for around US$450–750 a month, one-bedroom apartments for US$600–1,200, two-bedroom apartments for US$750–2,200 and three-bedroom homes for US$1,300–2,800, depending on building, view and facilities.
