Tucked away in Sangkat Chaktomuk, Khan Daun Penh, this charming colonial-style ground floor apartment offers a rare combination of old-world character and everyday comfort, just moments from BKK 1. Spanning 80 sqm, this fully furnished home is ideal for those seeking a quiet, spacious retreat in the heart of central Phnom Penh.

From the street, the building itself sets the tone: a striking yellow-and-white colonial facade. The property opens onto a beautifully landscaped courtyard, complete with mature palms, brick pathways, curved white garden borders, and a peaceful seating area — a genuinely tranquil outdoor space that’s rare to find in a city-center rental.

Inside the apartment itself, timeless Khmer-style patterned floor tiles run throughout the entry hall and bedrooms, paired with high ceilings, orange-trimmed cove lighting, and tall wood-shuttered windows that bring in soft natural light while preserving the building’s colonial charm.

The layout is practical and spacious: a long central hallway connects the living area to the kitchen, with a mounted TV console, dining table, and a water cooler station along the way. The functional kitchen is fitted with dark cabinetry, a gas stove, extractor hood, and a stainless steel double sink, offering everything needed for home cooking.

The two bedrooms are generously proportioned and finished with a mix of solid wood and antique-style furnishings — a dark wardrobe, bedside tables, a writing desk, and ornate tiled flooring that adds real character to each room. Tall shuttered windows dressed in warm curtains keep the rooms bright yet private. Two bathrooms serve the home, both finished in clean white tile with a shower enclosure, wall-mounted sink, and mirror.

Daun Penh: the real downtown

Day and night Riverside, Daun Penh, is busy. It is probably the real downtown Phnom Penh where the oldest parts of the city are located. Preah Sisowath (honoring King Sisowath 1904 to 1927 reign) is the avenue / boulevard running along the riverfront. It starts at the Buddhist Institute near Sothearos Boulevard. Then continues north to the Japanese Bridge where it becomes National Road 5 leading north to Battambang. Generations of days gone by have left their footprints from Angkor kings to French colonists to UN troops.

Riverside witnesses the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers and where the Water Festival is best viewed each November. It is always stunning, especially at sunup and sundown.

About BKK 1:

Boeung Keng Kang (BKK) 1 bordered by Sihanouk, Norodom, Mao Tse Tung and Monivong Boulevards is a popular area. It is the centre of Phnom Penh for its banks, hotels, restaurants, shops and bars and the place for business deals and seen as the ‘foreign capital’ for its cosmopolitan nature as well as the embassies of Switzerland, Bulgaria, Brunei and Sweden, various NGOs and international companies.

It also has many schools offering world class education and, although it’s pricey, it’s attractive for business on streets 278, 282, 63 and 51. Apartments and hotels are in the mid to upper range due to location and quality. After dark the streets are alive with bars, clubs, hotel rooftops and restaurants open for punters and, although things are pricier, you won’t want for more as this neighbourhood has pretty much everything.
