Upmarket BKK 1:
Boeung Keng Kang (BKK) 1 bordered by Sihanouk, Norodom, Mao Tse Tung and Monivong Boulevards is a popular area.
Being the centre of Phnom Penh with its banks, hotels, restaurants, shops and bars, BKK is seen as the place for business deals and considered the ‘foreign capital’ for its cosmopolitan nature.
Here are the embassies of Switzerland, Bulgaria, Brunei and Sweden and various NGOs and international companies.
BKK also has many schools offering world class education.
It may be pricey, but this area is attractive for all sorts of businesses on streets 278, 282, 63 and 51.
Apartments and hotels are in the mid to upper range due to location and quality.
The local market is located offers a range of goods including fresh food, clothes, jewelry, money exchanges and household goods.
Surrounding the market is a wide selection of international F + B options including coffee shops and bakeries.
After dark the streets are alive with bars, clubs, hotel rooftops and restaurants open for punters.
Things are pricier but you won’t want for much more.
BKK has pretty much everything.
Amid widespread devastation of the hospitality industry by COVID, one area in Phnom Penh seems to be defying the odds.
It includes bustling Bassac Lane, St 308 and St 21 where you will find cozy, high end bars and restaurants surrounded by new condos and other night venues.
The neighbourhood is made up of groovy little streets with cool bars and eateries almost hidden away.
It is the fun area with a distinct western vibe with bars in a different theme or style to suit.
COVID-19 slowed business here but it bounced back and now the night air is filled with music as people return to their old habits.
Bassac Lane is now so full of bars and hole-in-the-wall venues, that new venues are spilling into Street 308 and Street 21.
Because land prices here are 10-20% less than BKK 1, prices are cheaper all round. Prices of food and beverages are comparatively cheap. You can find a bar selling cocktails at $3, draught beer at $1 and meals from $5.
Amidst the general activity, there is a sense of optimism despite the tight border controls keeping tourist numbers down.
So instead of going to the usual haunts on Street 136 and Pub Street that have obviously been hard hit by the pandemic, check out Bassac Lane where the night lights are a little bit brighter.
How to minimize expenses
It makes sense to review your expenses and identify how to minimize your unnecessary spending so here are some suggestions to show you how to look after you, your finances AND the planet.
Simple tips on how to minimize expenses:
1. Use A/C sparingly and use DRY MODE
2. Switch to solar power where you can
3. Turn off devices completely, instead of putting them into STAND BY mode
4. Introduce penalties when your flat mate, partner or kids fail to switch things off
5. Turn lights off when not needed and change to energy-saving bulbs (take them to your new home, but remember to keep and replace the old ones!)
6. Try candlelit dinners or a BBQ with your loved one!
7. Buy clothes that don’t need ironing. A few wrinkles never killed anyone.
8. Go natural with hair – no straightener or dryer – or just shave it off altogether!
9. Turn your computer off for a few days and go outside
10. Have an Earth Hour (60 minutes with no power) every week. It could change your love life!
