About 7 Makara

Prampi Makara (7th January) named after the day when the Kampuchean People’s Revolutionary Armed Forces and Vietnamese troops liberated the capital from the Khmer Rouge in 1979.

It is literally central Phnom Penh, a web of narrow streets with every shop imaginable, all seemingly headed towards Orussey Market.

It is the real Phnom Penh, the beating heart, the raw flesh where shopowners and stall holder ply their trades.

A look up and you will see the pre-Pol Pot face of the city: the Khmer take of Modernism. Prampi Makara is also the smallest district in Phnom Penh.

It is subdivided into 8 Sangkats – Monorom, Mittapheap, Veal Vong, Orussey I, Orussey II, Orussey III, Orussey IV and Boeung Prolit – and 33 Kroms.

With an area of 2.2 km² and in 1998 had 96,192 inhabitants, it is one of the most densely populated parts of the city.

And yet, it is often overlooked.

Westerners tend to head towards Daun Penh or Chamkarmon as if nothing else matters.

The Chinese appear only to want to be in BKK 1 and Koh Pich, in close proximity to Naga World.

Both ends of the investor/renter spectrum look elsewhere. Here you can buy or rent living spaces for half the price of other areas.

They will have character and the moment you step into the street, the city presents itself in its fullness.

Orussey Market watches over all – chaos by day, an eerie stillness by night.

Barely 700m north are Vattanac and Canadia Towers, 400m south west is Molyvann’s Olympic Stadium and to the immediate south BKK 1 and east, Riverside.

It is all there… waiting.

About BKK 2:

Located west of BKK 1 and south of Olympic Market defined by Sihanouk Boulevard (north) and Monivong Boulevard (west).

Its convenient location is attractive to professionals and expats looking to live or invest in Phnom Penh’s real estate market.

Over the last few years, it has seen rapid development as locals and foreigners realised the potential of the area.

It now caters to much of the expat population overflowing from BKK 1 as prices are cheaper.

The area continues to transform as new build developments take shape.

Boeung Keng Kang 2 is seemingly quiet, yet easy to commute to surrounding areas like BKK 1, Riverside and Russian Market which have many shops, restaurants and cafes.

Boeung Keng Kang 2 itself has seen many marts, pharmacies, cafes and fashion shops opening up.

Property owners in turn recognise these changes and it is now more ‘expat friendly’.

Names like Kiwi Mart, Fresh Mart, Sakura, D & K Men Fashion Outlet, Swag Collection, ONE shop, ZIP Outlet, Fragrance House and an array of coffee shops and banks are now in operation.

Bassac Lane, only a stone’s throw away:

Amid widespread devastation of the hospitality industry by COVID, one area in Phnom Penh seems to be defying the odds.

It includes bustling St 308 and St 21 where you will find cozy, high end bars and restaurants surrounded by new condos and other night venues.

The neighborhood is made up of groovy little streets with cool bars and eateries almost hidden away.

It is the fun area with a distinct western vibe with bars in a different theme or style to suit.

COVID-19 slowed business here but it bounced back and now the night air is filled with music as people return to their old habits.

The neighborhood is now so full of bars and hole-in-the-wall venues, that new venues are spilling into Street 308 and Street 21.

Because land prices here are 10-20% less than BKK 1, prices are cheaper all round.

Prices of food and beverages are comparatively cheap. You can find a bar selling cocktails at $3, draught beer at $1 and meals from $5.

Amidst the general activity, there is a sense of optimism despite the tight border controls keeping tourist numbers down.

So instead of going to the usual haunts on St 136 and Pub Street that have obviously been hard hit by the pandemic, check out the lane where the night lights are a little bit brighter.
