Chbar Ampov: forgotten, outlaying and expanding According to the World Bank, strong economies are highly urban. Cambodia has 21% of its population living in urban areas whereas countries with similar GDP (Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan) are 35%. By 2050, Cambodia’s rate is likely to catch up. Phnom Penh is the largest city in the country with 2 million+ residents serving as a global gateway. It has plenty of opportunity and with more robust planning, congestion is being addressed in this fast changing city. Locations like this one are now getting more attention as they have suitable options near the city centre. The PPSEZ about 5km past the airport is an example of phased activity to decentralise. This will stimulate westward growth whereas development in Chbar Ampov will stretch the city east and south. Combined with projected growth, gentrification and ongoing investment, this location is ripe. Now is a good time to look before everyone else does.
